Current opportunities

We are recruiting experienced permanent staff members to augment our existing capability and to contribute to our growing portfolio of fusion energy projects. Prospective candidates will be highly motivated, technically accomplished, bright individuals, with the drive and commitment to handle technical and commercial responsibility for a range of tasks.

More senior staff may also take contract management responsibility for clients or sectors to further develop our already strong and varied client base.

Our ideal candidate will, as a minimum, hold a good honours degree (minimum requirement 2:1) in a relevant engineering or science discipline (most of our staff have a Masters degree or PhD). You will have a sound understanding of engineering principles and have relevant, hands-on experience of design, analysis and assessment of components, structures and systems to demonstrate structural integrity. For these positions candidates must have a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience.

We have a well-established, in-house development programme to encourage attainment of chartered status with professional engineering institutions and promote continual professional development for those already chartered. Opportunities for skills development and technical broadening are available at all levels.

You will be working in a friendly yet productive environment with exciting opportunities to undertake technically challenging work on a variety of projects, sites and technologies. We are specifically looking to expand our capability to support nuclear fusion energy. Opportunities include working on existing tokamaks in the UK, including the Joint European Torus and the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) and the MAST Upgrade Enhancement. We have a number of staff currently seconded as ITER Project Associates (IPA) to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project under construction in the South of France and we are looking to expand our team there as the construction schedule accelerates to 2025 and beyond.

We have a vacancy for an individual to support and maintain the efficient operation of our IT systems. In addition to the usual office and communication software, we use a number of items of proprietary specialist analysis software and we develop novel, in-house, software solutions to solve problems for our clients.

You will hold a degree in an IT-related subject. You will have the ability to think outside the box to create a seamless, productive working environment for our engineers. You should have a good working knowledge of Windows and/or Linux systems and be prepared to learn about new features when they arrive. You should have experience and knowledge in building computers to spec and troubleshooting and fixing software and hardware faults. You should have a genuine passion to work within the IT industry and to remain up to date with current technologies and developments. You will be flexible, adaptable and keen to learn. You will demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills. You will be working within a close-knit, friendly organisation, so a positive and friendly attitude and ability to get on with others will be a must. The ideal person for the role will have the following skills in/knowledge of:
• Good experience in Windows deployment.
• Server virtualisation (in particular Microsoft Hyper-V Core Server and VMWare).
• Networking (configuring switches, firewalls, routers and VPNs).
• Understanding of Linux.
• Server maintenance (Microsoft Server 2012R2, Ubuntu).
• Good understanding of Active Directory Services, GPO.
• Good understanding of Microsoft Exchange.
• Experience of WordPress.

Daily tasks will involve:
• Managing, maintaining and developing the IT infrastructure within the business
• Managing and updating current Windows laptops and desktops as updates are released, and for new models;
• Developing new solutions to streamline the company operation and meet new challenges.
• Maintaining current software that is being run.
• Supporting staff on a daily basis with technical issues with a variety of models of laptop and PC devices.
• Performing routine audits of systems and software as part of a proactive maintenance regime.
• Maintaining IT security, administering network access and anti-virus updates.
• Configuring and managing backups and using them to restore lost files.
• Creating and managing a ‘wiki’ to provide a database of known solutions to known issues.
• Creating and managing other databases and a ‘knowledge tree’ to assist our engineers to retrieve important technical information from past projects.
• Maintain the company’s web site.

You must be able to work nights and weekends, when required, to undertake maintenance and updates that cannot be carried out during the normal working hours when the systems are in use.

We are offering an industrial placement for 2019-20 and are looking for prospective candidates who are highly motivated, technically accomplished and bright individuals, with the drive and commitment to handle technical and commercial responsibility for a range of tasks.  Our ideal candidate will, as a minimum, be working towards a good honours degree (minimum requirement 2:1) in Mechanical Engineering.

The successful candidate will be assisting our consultants on stress analysis, fracture assessment and finite element analysis of the existing fleet of AGR nuclear power stations, the development of a new fleet of EPR nuclear power stations and research into the development of fusion energy.  Full training will be provided.

• Providing support to a team of 30 professional engineers.

Full training will be provided. You will report to our Management Accountant and Company Secretary, who is a CIMA qualified accountant.

• Assisting with compiling bids and tenders for specific enquiries and/or framework contracts.
